Software Engineer Interview Tips 2025

Tech interviews in India typically have 3–5 rounds. Each round tests something different, and most candidates fail not because they lack skills, but because they don't prepare strategically.

Round 1: Online Assessment (OA)

Most companies start with a timed coding assessment on HackerRank, Codechef, or their own platform.

What's tested: Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA), sometimes SQL.

How to prepare:

  • Solve 100–150 LeetCode problems minimum (focus on Easy + Medium)
  • Key topics: Arrays, Strings, Trees, Graphs, Dynamic Programming, Sorting
  • Practice typing speed and reading problems under time pressure
  • Don't spend more than 20 minutes on one problem — move on and come back

Round 2: Technical DSA Round (with Interviewer)

This is a live coding session where you explain your thought process.

Common mistake: Jumping straight to code. Instead:

  1. Clarify the problem (edge cases, constraints)
  2. Think out loud about your approach
  3. Start with a brute force solution, then optimize
  4. Analyze time and space complexity

What interviewers actually look for:

  • Can you communicate your thinking?
  • Do you know when to ask for hints?
  • Can you debug your own code?

Round 3: Technical Concepts Round

This round tests your knowledge of CS fundamentals:

  • Operating Systems: Processes, threads, deadlocks, memory management
  • Databases: SQL, indexing, normalization, transactions
  • Networking: HTTP/HTTPS, REST APIs, TCP/IP basics
  • OOP Concepts: SOLID principles, design patterns

For experienced candidates: Deep-dives into your tech stack — React internals, Java memory model, Python GIL, etc.

Round 4: System Design (for 2+ Years Experience)

For mid-senior roles, you'll be asked to design scalable systems like "Design a URL shortener" or "Design a payment gateway."

Framework to follow:

  1. Clarify requirements and scale (users, QPS)
  2. High-level architecture (components, data flow)
  3. Database schema and choice (SQL vs NoSQL)
  4. API design
  5. Scalability considerations (caching, load balancing, CDN)

Round 5: HR Round

Often underestimated. This round can eliminate you.

Key questions to prepare:

  • "Tell me about yourself" (90-second elevator pitch)
  • "Why do you want to leave your current company?"
  • "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
  • "What's your expected CTC?" (research first — use salary guides)

Tip: Don't bad-mouth your current employer. Frame everything positively.

Before the Interview

  • Research the company (products, tech stack, recent news)
  • Prepare 2-3 questions to ask the interviewer
  • Test your internet, camera, and mic for video interviews
  • Have your resume open in front of you
